How Cultures Flourish by Exploiting Men. We discuss why men have enjoyed a higher economic and social status than women while at the same time making up most of the prison population, deaths on the job, and homeless population in America. Interesting interview. Reminds me a lot of ‘The Myth of Male Power’ by Warren Farrell.

You just doubled your Cool Points in my book. Roy Baumeister is my favorite social psychologist (even above Philip Zimbardo), and a professional hero of mine. When I talk about the psychology of warriorhood in my book, I draw heavily on Baumeister’s work on self-control.

My Personal Baumeister Story: I was at an academic conference in Toronto (International Network on Personal Meaning) a couple of years ago, Baumeister was the keynote speaker, and I was asked to introduce him. Yay! I had my introduction all set and ready to go… and then Baumeister walked up to the mic and started talking without any introduction. I was crushed.
{sad face, single poignant tear}

I look forward to hearing the second part of the interview.

I recently heard another broadcast on NPR about how men of this generation are super heroes or zeros. It seems now that women are starting to have the same professions and better pay we’re at either one or the other end of the spectrum.

I really liked his point about how a lot of the different levels in either man-centric or female-centric careers/interests are not due to bias, but due to differing interests. I am currently waiting for the next test for the Fire Department of the City of New York, and I thought his point paralled nicely with the current tests situation. There is so much talk about these tests and the job itself being racist, but I can’t help feeling that maybe they just don’t want the job. It’s a tough point to make in the current racist/sexist/etc. climate and the I think Dr. Baumeister made it very well. Great podcast!
