Gorkha Soldier Saves Girl from Rape and Takes on 40 Train Robbers with Only a Khukuri

Bishnu Shrestha, who had just retired from the Indian army where he served as a Gorkha soldier, held off a horde of robbers that tried to rob a train in India. From the article on Republica:

“The band of about 40 robbers, some of whom were travelling as passengers, stopped the train in the Chittaranjan jungles in West Bengal around midnight. Shrestha– who had boarded the train at Ranchi in Jharkhand, the place of his posting–was in seat no. 47 in coach AC3.

“They started snatching jewelry, cell phones, cash, laptops and other belongings from the passengers,” Shrestha recalled. The soldier had somehow remained a silent spectator amidst the melee, but not for long. He had had enough when the robbers stripped an 18-year-old girl sitting next to him and tried to rape her right in front of her parents. He then took out his khukuri and took on the robbers.

“The girl cried for help, saying ´You are a soldier, please save a sister´,” Shrestha recalled. “I prevented her from being raped, thinking of her as my own sister,” he added. He took one of the robbers under control and then started to attack the others. He said the rest of the robbers fled after he killed three of them with his khukuri and injured eight others…“Fighting the enemy in battle is my duty as a soldier; taking on the dacoits in the train was my duty as a human being,” said the Indian army nayak.

Essentially, one man took on 40 armed thieves with only a khukuri. What is a khukuri?

Thank you thank god finally a hero has emerged to fight this disease that rots mans brain and turns him into a compassionless animal. This ex soldier is a saint and should be rewarded by showing all other males how to behave and be as honorable as he.
Well done sir, I bow to you. Cheers

I would have killed every single one of them. Cut off their DI*k and tight them at the back of the train and drive the train and drag them behind on the railway tIll they burn in hell.

Sadly here in the U.S. we would be arrested for carrying one.

Ken June 23, 2015 at 10:55 am

Interesting side note here: this trained and armed soldier didn’t jump up and start hacking off limbs when the bandits were “only” taking property. He made a conscious choice not to deploy deadly force in defense of people’s “stuff”. But once it became a crime against someone’s person, he acted, so understate the case. He didn’t pull out his knife and point it at someone; he killed three and injured (and that’s likely a euphemism for removing a limb) eight others. That’s the model, right there: only when you must, and then with great force and fury. Gotta love a Gurkha…

A khukri is a traditional Gurkha knife, with a curved blade.

Saibal Mazumdar June 28, 2015 at 10:59 am

U r not only a pride of the Gorkhas but the entire mankind . Long live U and yur race …

V Robinson June 29, 2015 at 7:56 am

This is as good an explanation of the history of the kukri and demonstration of its use as you’ll find. Despite the title ‘Fent Yudh [Dagger Fighting]‘ it is entirely on the awesome kukri, a weapon that punches way above its weight: https://youtu.be/f1sV0Y-7NQk?t=1m25s

Linda June 30, 2015 at 8:51 am

Typical Gurkha soldier: they are the only ones that know how to use a Khukuri: Also see the Gurkha who defeated the Taliban, in his outpost.

Mafiace June 30, 2015 at 8:49 pm

Gotta love the Gurkhas and their kukri! This is mine – http://www.devonbuy.com/gurkha-kukri/. But, I’m no Gurkha…

Salute…this is something that everyone must have…gutz and care towards people who are in need. A good example of courage and humanity. The girl’s future may be dark if she were to get rapped but this noble soldier stood for what is right alone. May Allah bless him for his good deed.

Jaybee July 1, 2015 at 3:04 am

WELL DONE SOLDIER!! But at the same time. We all should be aware that how many train passengers just stood still. 40 robbers against an entire train? How many passengers were there? Hundreds? It’s sad to realize that society would rather choose to silently watch while shutting mouth and ear. Thank God there is ONE person who had the guts tostand up!! But the question still remains…what would YOU do in such a situation. IF WE ALL would stand up and SAVE EACHOTHER, no criminal would ever have a chance.

Mc July 1, 2015 at 12:48 pm

If a person says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or a Gurkha

Stuart C July 3, 2015 at 4:59 am

Salute you my friend, as an ex-soldier, a Gurkha, you did exactly what needed to be done.

maurizio July 3, 2015 at 1:54 pm

Ayo Gorkhali!!!

Hernan Moreno July 4, 2015 at 12:43 pm

Well done sir. A Khukiri is a formitable weapon. Reminds me of a friend once having to face down 20 invaders with a .30-30 (1894 Winchester lever-action rifle). What more do you want, I commented with a grin :)
