Editor’s Note: Wabasha — or Wapasha — I (1718-1806) was a American Indian warrior and the chief of a band of Santee Sioux who resided in Minnesota. He was a man greatly respected for his ethics by both his tribe and their British neighbors. These are his teachings, as recorded by Ernest Thompson Seton.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the <\/span>day of <\/span>his strength no man is fat. Fat is good in a beast, but in a man it is disease and <\/span>comes only of <\/span>an evil life.<\/p>\n

No man will eat three times each sun if he would keep his body strong and <\/span>his mind unclouded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

If you would purify your heart and <\/span>so see clearer the <\/span>way of the <\/span>Great Spirit, touch no food for two days or more, according to your strength. For thereby your spirit hath mastery over the <\/span>body and the <\/span>body is purged.<\/p>\n

Touch not the <\/span>poisonous firewater that makes wise men turn fools. Neither touch food nor taste drink that robs the <\/span>body of <\/span>its power or the <\/span>spirit.<\/p>\n

Guard your tongue in youth, and <\/span>in age you may mature a thought that will be of <\/span>service to your people.<\/p>\n

Praise God when you rise, when you bathe, when you eat, when you meet your friends and <\/span>for all good happenings. And <\/span>if so be you see no cause for praise the <\/span>fault is in yourself.<\/p>\n

A proven Minisino [warrior] is at all times clean, courteous and <\/span>master of <\/span>himself.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>wise man will not hurt his mind for the <\/span>passing pleasure of the <\/span>body.<\/p>\n

If any man be given over to sex appetite he is harboring a rattlesnake, whose sting is rottenness and <\/span>sure death.<\/p>\n

By prayer and <\/span>fasting and <\/span>fixed purpose you can rule your own spirit, and <\/span>so have power over all those about you.<\/p>\n

Bathe every sun in cold water and <\/span>one sun in seven enter the <\/span>sweat lodge.<\/p>\n

When your time comes to die, sing your death song and <\/span>die pleasantly, not like the <\/span>white men whose hearts are ever filled with the <\/span>fear of <\/span>death, so when their time comes, they weep and <\/span>wail and <\/span>pray for a little more time so they may live their lives over again in a different manner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
