This seems like a slam dunk factoid as to why folks should avoid the altar.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s just one problem: it isn&#8217;t true and hasn&#8217;t been for awhile now.<\/p>\n<p>Divorce rates have in fact been declining for a&nbsp;few&nbsp;decades and marriages are stronger than they&#8217;ve been in quite sometime. Here are some quotes\/statistics from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/02\/upshot\/the-divorce-surge-is-over-but-the-myth-lives-on.html?_r=1&amp;abt=0002&amp;abg=1\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The divorce rate peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s and has been declining for the three decades since.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those who married in the 2000s are so far divorcing at even lower rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If current trends continue, <strong>nearly two-thirds of marriages will never involve a divorce<\/strong>, according to data from Justin Wolfers, a University of Michigan economist.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of college-educated people who married in the early 2000s, <strong>only about 11 percent divorced<\/strong> by their seventh anniversary, the last year for which data is available.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ultimately, a long view is likely to show that the rapid rise in divorce during the 1970s and early 1980s was an anomaly. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, couples in the working class are still divorcing at rates close to the 70s\/80s peak. But overall, marriage in the modern world is quite robust, and seems to be getting stronger, rather than weaker.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the erroneousness of the &#8220;half of marriages end in divorce&#8221; statistic, it steadfastly&nbsp;refuses to die&#8211;probably because it makes for such an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/beware-the-too-compelling-narrative\/\">incredibly compelling narrative<\/a> for those who want to believe that the&nbsp;world in general, and women in particular, are going downhill and are worse than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this PSA will&nbsp;add some balance to such notions. Share it around.
