From A Conversation On Cool
I think it’s awesome. Willie is one of the greatest athletes to ever live. To see him playing a street game with “common folk” is a prime example of the difference in values of past generations and those of today.
Stars and athletes were larger than life heroes, yet remained “normal” in peoples eyes (for the most part).
Today, (once again, for the most part) celebrities have become known for their excess and wanting to be away from the masses to prove their status.
Think about it, Willie Mays was one of THE ICONS! Kids looked up this guy, and than later on that day saw him on the street playing with their buddies.
I can’t picture A-Rod on a street right now playing ball with 6 year olds.
Yes, times have changed. I do not think it is a question about A-Rod showing up to play stickball, but rather do kids even still play stickball. I call for more stickball and fewer video games.
It’s funny that you use Rodriguez as an example. It could have been any other player, but I recently saw footage of Alex Rodriguez doing just that.
