I’m really looking forward to seeing another film version of my favorite book, The Great Gatsby. Leonardo DiCaprio stars and Baz Luhrmann is directing. And it’s going to be in 3-D, which is…interesting.

You had me until 3D.
Why 3D??
3D? Why isn’t regular cinematic technology enough for this classic?
I an excited about this movie, especially the casting. I can definitely see Leonardo DiCaprio being good as Jay Gatsby, and Tobey Maguire seems like a perfect fit for Nick Carraway.
I just hope there are lots of ‘splosions.
Seriously, why 3D?
Why 3D?
We live in three dimensions.
It may be the 3D technology is evolving and not soup, yet. I wish them luck. Yet, I could inquire if this will be yet another attempt to make a talking picture? There is little doubt that these “talkies” have utterly destroyed the great silent art of the cinema. One could say that, but I couldn’t possibly comment. (I’m still adjusting to the idea of women playing the female roles in the theatre.)
Jim: We live in three dimensions, but we don’t need pop-up 3D to portray them on the screen. Look at the picture above; the man in the green cardigan is clearly behind and to the left of DiCaprio, while his bow-tie is clearly above his shoes. There you go; length, width and depth, all due to the magic of perspective. The human eye is able to discern three dimensional interactions from a two dimensional picture, all 3D does is degrade picture quality, raise ticket prices, and break immersion, making us very aware that we are watching a movie. Unlike sound, colour or women, 3D does not enhance a dramatic film in any way, it simply cheapens what could otherwise be a great movie.
Much like other 3D movies, I am certain that there will be the option to view it without the 3D. I’m really excited to see a new take on The Great Gatsby and DiCaprio seems like an excellent choice for the lead role.
I’ve read the book three times and love it, but I can never really understand why. I think DiCaprio is also a good choice, but UGH: 3D? This technology needs to go away.
I’m sure Leonardo DiCaprio will make Gatsby accessible to a new generation of movie goers, but I don’t see him besting Robert Redford. He’s just not WASPy enough.
In the picture it almost looks like Leonardo is wearing a pair of Jack Purcells. Now THAT would be stylin’.
I’m big fan of the book and still love the Jack Clayton film. Can’t wait till this comes out!
