24 Podcast Suggestions for Men

by Jeremy Anderberg

The humble podcast has seen its fair share of ups and downs since its inception (at least as we know it now) about 15 years ago. These days, podcasting is more popular than ever, and for good reason. It’s never been easier to have a whole library of information right in your pocket. Cars have […]

18 More Manly Smells

by Brett & Kate McKay

Just about four years ago we published a post on 15 Manly Smells. The article received a ton of comments from folks who wanted to add their own favorite manly smells to the list, and the other day I found myself lost in enjoyment reading over them all again. So many of the additions were […]

Email subscribers, to watch video click here. Editor’s note: This is a guest post from David Erik Nelson, author of Snip, Burn, Solder, Shred: Seriously Geeky Stuff to Make with Your Kids. Although store-bought water rockets were once an almost universal part of childhood (at least in suburban middle America, where I grew up), DIY […]

How to Decorate a Man Room

by A Manly Guest Contributor

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jayson Franklin and Morgan Gagne of Manly Vintage. There’s a good chance the first interior decorator was a guy, scratching pictures of a glorious hunt on the wall of his cave, trying to show off for his friends.  This was the first man cave, if you will. […]

15 Great iPhone Apps for Men

This series is supported by Gillette. Learn more about Gillette and its products at Gillette.com.

Throughout time men have harnessed technology and different tools to improve their lives and to become the best man they could be. Cavemen used flint and steel to start fires. Ancient soldiers smelted different metals to create stronger swords and weapons. Mariners used astrolabes and compasses to conquer the seas. The Colt revolver became the go-to tool for many a man in the 19th century, and it helped tame the Wild West. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

Weasels Ripped My Flesh! Vintage Men’s Adventure Magazines

by Brett & Kate McKay

Before Men’s Health and Maxim Magazine, before the men’s magazine category was dominated by glossy, slick publications, there were the “He-Man,” “pulp,” or “sweat magazines.” These “men’s adventure” magazines catered to men of a different generation and reflected the taste and sensibilities of those men. The readership largely consisted of GI’s who had fought and […]

11 Ways to Get Into the Holiday Spirit

by Brett & Kate McKay

“Instead of being a time of unusual behavior, Christmas is perhaps the only time in the year when people can obey their natural impulses and express their true sentiments without feeling self-conscious and, perhaps, foolish.  Christmas, in short, is about the only chance a man has to be himself.”  ~Francis C. Farley Share There are […]

50 Best Books for Boys and Young Men

by Brett & Kate McKay

Share As a boy, one of my favorite times in school was when we’d get a new Scholastic News book “catalog.” I would pour over the pages picking out which books I wanted and filling out the order sheet. And as soon I got them, I was lying under the covers with my nose buried […]

15 Best Buddy Movies

by Brett & Kate McKay

The buddy movie represents an uniquely American genre of cinema. Instead of a male-female romantic couple being the focus of the story, buddy movies center on the relationship between two heterosexual males. Buddy movies are unabashedly about male bonding and friendship, and they all pretty much follow the same script.  Two or more men with […]

13 More of the Worst Products for Men Ever Created

by Brett & Kate McKay

One of AoM’s earliest and strangely most popular posts (people just pretend to like our serious stuff-they really want to know more about chest hair toupees) was a post we wrote called the 10 Worst Products for Men Ever Created. Since people had so much fun checking out the wacky products of yesteryear, we decided […]

15 Manly Smells

by Brett & Kate McKay

Smells can conjure up some powerful memories. The smell of pine needles can take you back to childhood Christmases or the smell of a laundry detergent can remind you of home. For me, there are certain smells that I’ve come to associate with manliness. Whenever I smell them I think of my dad or grandpa […]

This Just In…..The 11 Manliest Anchormen of All Time

by Brett & Kate McKay

With the advent of television came the arrival of the anchorman. Sitting behind his desk, earnestly staring into the camera and reporting the news each evening in his calm and steady voice, he was a man you could trust. Night after night, Americans invited him into their homes as a friend to steer them through […]

Your Grandpa’s Babes

by Brett & Kate McKay

Believe it or not, your grandpa is a red blooded male, just like you. And just like you, he appreciates the beauty of women. When he was your age, he snuck a peak at the latest cover girls on the newsstands or went to the movies to see the latest beauty grace the silver screen. […]

Are You Hep to the Jive? The Cab Calloway Hepster Dictionary

by Brett & Kate McKay

Each generation has their own slang and lingo, a language that defines them. Each generation also has a purveyor of cool who creates a language that only the initiated understand. During the 1950s and 60s, Frank Sinatra created a personal lingo that influenced a generation of swanky and swaggering men. But before Sinatra, there […]

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Art of Manliness Forum regular, Karmazon. Make sure to check out his posts in the forum. He always provides good fodder for discussion. 8 Inspirational Football Locker Room Speeches

by Brett & Kate McKay

The college football season starts on Saturday (okay, technically Thursday. But I’m saying Saturday because that’s when Oklahoma plays. Boomer Sooner!). I love football. It’s one of the manliest sports. For it is truly the sport closest to combat. Men strategize in their war room, don their armor, and line up against their opponent. Victory […]

The 15 Greatest Man Cries (Plus 5 Dishonorable Mentions)

by Brett & Kate McKay

On Friday we discussed when it is appropriate for a man to cry. In short, a man should only cry when something truly significant happens. The less frequently something occurs, the more weight given it. Thus the rarity of male tears lends to them true potency. When a man sheds tears, particularly in the public […]

Tired of Beer? Become a Soda Connoisseur

by Brett & Kate McKay

“Soda is a good combination of chemistry and art.” ~ Chris Webb When your grandpa took a young lady on a date, chances are they ended up at their local soda fountain. There, they flirted and sipped on delicious and refreshing fizzy beverages. When he went off to fight in the Big One, chances are […]

The 10 Worst Products For Men Ever Created

by Brett and Kate McKay

While much has been said about the way advertisers have always hawked their products to women by playing on their insecurities, men have not been immune from similar pitches. While they may worry less about crow’s feet than ladies do, there are still some things that make men feel insecure. Hoping to capitalize on these […]
