The Art of Manliness en Español: Ahora Más Varonil

As our audience has grown over these past five years, we’ve discovered that more and more of our readers live outside the United States and that many reside in Spanish-speaking countries. We’ve gotten a ton of requests to please make a version of AoM in their native tongue. We listened and instead of forcing these fine gentlemen to rely on the often incorrect Google Translate to translate our articles from English to Spanish, we decided to create an official Spanish version of the Art of Manliness.

Si quieres leer este post introducción en español, por favor haga clic aquí.

The Vision for the Art of Manliness en Español

At the outset, I want to say that creating a foreign language version of The Art of Manliness is an experiment for us. We’re learning as we go. My hope is that by offering a language and cultural-specific version of AoM, we can better serve more of the great men who believe in The Art of Manliness way of life.

I’d like to share with you how I see the creation and development of The Art of Manliness en Español going. Right now, there are two planned phases of development.

Phase I of my plan is to simply translate past articles from our English site and publish them on the Spanish site. We’ll only be translating and re-publishing the very best from the archives that cross cultural boundaries. The primary goal during Phase I is to build up a core audience for The Art of Manliness en Español so that we have the web traffic to support this venture. I imagine this taking from three to six months.

After we’ve established our core audience, we’ll move into Phase II. The goal during Phase II is to create original content that’s geared specifically towards Spanish-speaking men. I’m well aware that much of our content on the English version of the Art of Manliness is geared towards an Anglo, and particularly an American audience. I want to make sure that the content we provide on The Art of Manliness en Español resonates with all our Spanish-speaking readers — those living in Spain, Latin America, and even here in the States as well. So for example, instead of doing a Lessons in Manliness article about some famous American man, I’d love to see a Lessons in Manliness article about great men from the Spanish-speaking world. I also want to recreate our 100 Books Every Man Should Read list, but include significant Spanish authors in the mix.

To fulfill this goal of creating original content, I plan on soliciting article submissions directly from the AoM en Español audience. If you’re an aspiring writer/blogger who speaks (and writes!) Spanish, stay tuned.

How You Can Help

We don’t have an advertising or marketing budget to promote this site, so we’ll need as much help from you to spread the word about The Art of Manliness en Español as possible. The faster we can build up our audience, the sooner we can begin rolling out new features and original content. If you’re a Spanish-speaking reader, please like our Art of Manliness en Español Facebook Page, follow AoM Español on Twitter, and sign up for our weekly email newsletter. If you have Spanish-speaking friends, please let them know about the Art of Manliness en Español.

Thank you all for your continued support of The Art of Manliness. We look forward to offering even more additions to the site that will help men from different cultural backgrounds become the best men they can be.

Encantando de esta noticia. Llevo ya varios meses desde ser suscriptor fiel a los artículos en inglés y a pesar de que la audiencia meta es estadounidense, mucho ha sido de provecho independientemente.

Howdy,

I couldn’t find your email or another form of more direct contact so I’ll post this here (Twitter limits me to 140 characters!),
I hope you’ll read this!
I’ve been following your site for some time now, I enjoy it very much, its one of my homepages! I am a Mexican young man living in Mexico, and I just wanted to say that I am willing and would like to help in the building of this Art of Manliness en Español, that is if you needed any help!
I’ve translated a bit in the past and I think I could help in the translation of articles or stuff like that, maybe I could even help with some other things, I don’t know what you need but again, I’m willing.

Thanks!
- Hamlet.

Hello Mr. Brett McKay, this is the first time that I write to you despite the fact that I am an assiduos reader of AoM. I am not a blogger or professional writer but my native language is spanish (I am from México) so please contact me because I want to help with translaiting some arcticles to spanish.

Thank you.

Such an excellent idea!

5 Jacob April 2, 2013 at 11:56 pm

I think it’s awesome that you are doing this! I lived in Honduras for two years, so I know that the men there could benefit a lot from a website like this.
I hope it goes well!

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?! Even though I can read spanish perfectly well and I plan on still reading in English, I am very excited for this plan and the opportunity to spread this content to a bigger audience. Keep up the good work!

Sr. y Sra. Mckay,

10 Adrian April 3, 2013 at 12:32 am

I am thrilled to read this, I wish you the best of luck and hope that the Art of Manliness en español will be a success. I’ll try to read both sites.

11 Sebastian April 3, 2013 at 12:34 am

That sounds like great news! I’m from Mexico and I’ve been reading your blog for some time now. If you need help with translations and stuff shoot me an email. I studied in the US for 10 years and now I’m back living in the motherland.

Anyway great site, keep it up!

12 Alberto April 3, 2013 at 1:58 am

A great new! Muchas gracias!

13 nullrend April 3, 2013 at 2:31 am

Long time RSS lurker here.

For the longest time I’ve had just that suggestion in mind, but I didn’t see it actually happening. Now that is *is* happening, I see an excellent future for it.

Will you guys need help? I’d like to help with translation and planning for the eventual creation of original content. There are a lot of things to do. Count me in.

14 Bea April 3, 2013 at 5:53 am

If you need a hand translating I’d be delighted to help :)

15 Jesse April 3, 2013 at 5:55 am

I wish you grear success with la versión en español de “The Art of Manliness”! My in-laws will all be interested in it.

16 habib April 3, 2013 at 6:36 am

Nice idea. I’m sure there won’t ever be a “persian” version of AoM but I, as an iranian and international user, have been a fan of AoM for more than a year. And I will be a fan of this nice manly website for years. Whereas my english reading skill is much better than my writing skill.

I just wanted to say even in Middel East there are some fans for AoM.

17 Jungo April 3, 2013 at 7:40 am

I just wanted to commend you on your efforts to spread to a broader audience. As a Latino I love this idea. I love when people take other languages into consideration. Again, I respect this move. Now I can read this site in both languages. Thank you.

18 Charles April 3, 2013 at 9:02 am

Muy bueno! Me gusta la concepto. Queiro leer para trabajar en mi Español.

19 Rob April 3, 2013 at 9:04 am

Wow. Underlines the awesomness of this page perfectly. English isn’t my native language, too, and I cannot understand spanish but it is a great step for AoM.

I don’t think I will ever get a version of my native language (german) but since my english understanding is quite good I’m good with that. :-)

20 renato April 3, 2013 at 9:13 am

Veryu nice attitude!

I’m Brazilian and can read both English and Spanish, but to keep my RSS reader simple, I’ll keep only the English version for now.

I’d like to hear from you that the original Spanish content will be translated and published in the English version. IMO such diversity (both the Anglo and the Spanish points of view) should be available for the American audience and the non-American English-speaking fellas spread through the world.

Anyway, thanks, gracias, obrigado!

21 Ricardo April 3, 2013 at 9:14 am

Si necesitan ayuda traduciendo, o para material original, yo puedo ayudar sin cargos. Esta pagina es muy informativa y me gustaria ayudar en cualquier manera.

22 Michael McKenzie April 3, 2013 at 9:14 am

Excellent Idea… I was in a state of culture shock while in the military on my first deployment overseas. What is considered Manly in the USA is not always manly in other regions and it goes the other way also.

23 Spencer April 3, 2013 at 9:46 am

As a young man in the process of learning Spanish, I will use the Art of Manliness en Español extensively.

24 Nik April 3, 2013 at 10:14 am

Muy bueno! Soy appriendo Español. Voy a leer este sitio web en Español por apprender!

25 M April 3, 2013 at 11:04 am

You guys really are amazing. :)

26 Hilda April 3, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Wonderful idea. I’m a professional translator (English – Spanish) so if you need any help in this respect, count me in. I also love to write and many of the topics you cover are within my scope.

27 Tomas April 3, 2013 at 2:10 pm

As a long time reader of AofM from Mexico, I have to thank you for your effort. I’ve noticed a few typos, but I’m sure they’ll eventually diseapear.

It’s great that you listen to your readers suggestions!

I’ll continue to read the blog in it’s original languge because it helps me with my english, but I’ll definitely recomend it to more people now.

28 Gage C. April 3, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Best of luck. Translations can be a bear. Hay Muchos Jamon Para Dos Juevos.

29 Colby April 3, 2013 at 3:01 pm

You’re awesome!

30 Chris April 3, 2013 at 3:32 pm

I would love to help with translation if you would have any interest in my help, I have a superior toefl oral proficiency rating in spanish interpretation, and I can help with back translation or proofreading articles translated. Sounds like an exciting time for AOM!

31 Carles April 3, 2013 at 3:56 pm

Excellent news.

By the way, you committed a little mistake at the beginning: “Si quieres leer este post introducción en español, por favor haga clic aquí.”

You start using the informal form (refering to the reader as “tú”, what is usually called “tutear”) in “quieres”, but you end using the formal form (refering to the reader as “usted”, or “hablar de usted”) in “haga”. Choose whiever pleases you more (I would feel right with whichever one, being as a native) but be consistent.

An another thing, have you considered not translating “manliness” and as “virilidad”? I read somewhere that the manliness you always talk about is the quality of the man as opposed to the boy, not as opposed to the woman. I don’t think “virilidad” reflects at all that meaning.

Just look for example what the RAE, the main authority on Spanish language, (at least as much as a institution can be an authority on a language) http://lema.rae.es/drae/srv/search?key=viril “Belonging or related to the man”. I’d like to suggest you use instead “hombría”, which the RAE (http://www.rae.es/drae/srv/search?id=FE1LJFWZoDXX2miOcpVQ ) associates with integrity, courage, honesty, probity… (also here http://www.merriam-webster.com/spanish/hombr%C3%ADa and here)

I hope it helps :-)

32 Andrés April 3, 2013 at 4:08 pm

This is great news, Brett. I´m a native spanish speaker and a journalist. If you need help with translations or writing new articles I´m more than happy to help. You can check some of my writing here:

Un abrazo y mucho éxito!

33 Rob April 3, 2013 at 4:25 pm

A great idea. I hope that when you are able to start developing original material for the Spanish language site you might from time to time use examples from each site to highlight the cultural construction of masculinity.

34 Daniel April 3, 2013 at 7:38 pm

For your new 100 Books list, I would love to see El Cid, Don Quixote, The Dark Night of the Soul, and anything by Jorge Luis Borges.

35 Matt April 3, 2013 at 7:55 pm

If you need help translating, I’ll be glad to!

36 Thiago April 4, 2013 at 5:41 am

I would like to see this site in portuguese. So, if you need any hand to translate to portuguese, ill be glad to help!

37 cvllvm April 4, 2013 at 6:39 am

@Daniel: you will find this list on the spanish edition of the BRETT & KATE’s “The AoM” book.

Authors such as Azorín, Gracián, F. de Rojas, Calderón de la Barca (read Life is a Dream), Cervantes, Juan Ramón Jiménez are included.

38 Chris April 4, 2013 at 2:35 pm

Es buena la idea, pero a mi me era mas agradable leer en Ingles, además tenia la oportunidad de practicar y aprender temas interesantes de otras culturas, para mi no es lo mejor y me decepciona un poco por creo que se volvera ahora más comericial el sitio.

39 Brian Barbosa April 4, 2013 at 7:01 pm

Sounds awesome!
If you need help with a translator
I’m from Mexico and my English it’s really well, also I’m such a fan if your site!

40 Juan Antonio April 5, 2013 at 2:50 am

Hey man I’m a great fan of your work

I’m a mexican, living in Mexico City If you need help translating something I would be glad to help you.

41 Tom Castro April 5, 2013 at 1:07 pm

How! There seem to be a lot of readers from Latin America.

Would you mind telling us figures about the number of visitors from Spanish-speaking countries? I just had no idea it was so popular there.

Tom Castro.

42 Emilio Merino April 9, 2013 at 3:31 am

Even though I like reading the original AoM in English to further improve my language skills, the idea of a Spanish site is quite a nice one. I’m from Spain, but I seem to be in the minority here, as most of the comments come from Latin-Americans!

43 Pancho April 12, 2013 at 5:28 pm

Congratulations! I think this is a terrific idea. If you’re still reading this may I offer a couple of suggestions? I think you should place a link to the Spanish site at the top of the page next to “archives” etc. to continue to alert readers of the English site of the existence of the Spanish version (and link back to the English site from the top of the Spanish site) especially as this post moves farther and farther back into the archive. Also, AoM has the potential to help English-language and Spanish-language learners if you link back to the original English language articles from the Spanish language versions (and vice-versa). A guy could read the articles side-by-side in separate windows as parallel texts, something very useful in learning a language (and a way to keep bringing new readers to both versions of AoM). Anyway, thank you and I wish you the best of luck!

44 Karlbert April 20, 2013 at 11:34 pm

I would very much like to help you out. I am a blogger AND translator, and have been following your blog for about a year. Do contact me!

45 Juan Diego April 24, 2013 at 1:15 am

Man, what an awesome idea! Personally, I had been thinking about the same thing. I love this site and it has truly contributed to my own manly growth so I have tried to share it with some friends but not all of them know English well enough to understand (I reside in L.America).

I love writing, I’m even in the process of writing a novel (i hooe it turns out) and I write a lot at my university (mostly essays on Law and Politics. Majoring in Political Science and International Relations) so I would certainly love helping with translating and creating content for Art of Manliness en Español.

Need help, don’t doubt mine! Good luck with the project.

J.D.

Are there any translations yet? I work with several men from South America who lead various men groups or masculinity organizations. It seems to be catching on in some Latin countries.

It’s a very good idea to reach out to them. Many spanish-speaking men are eager for more resources of general male-ness.
