This week I’m digging the sturdy black nylon bags from Ignoble and the very nice field watches from Zurich’s Military Watch Company — a large supplier of watches for the American armed forces, police departments, and other government agencies.

Would have to be my top choice as well. Although the down jacket is quite tempting.

It was just a cheap thing that my dad brought back for me when he returned from Vietnam, but it represented an important step in my path to manhood. It marked the transition from carefree, timeless days of my childhood to the days where I was expected to be certain places at certain times. The centrality of time and its measurement were never more apparent than when I later joined the Navy myself. Every day moved to a rhythm set by the sweeping hand of the clock — reveille, morning quarters, and the punctual progression of “watches” through the day and night. I recall the almost religious ritual of synchronizing all the ships chronometers.

I have worn a watch every day since I got my first one, and I am sad to see that it appears to be a fading custom. I rarely see young people wearing a wristwatch today. Instead, they rely on their ubiquitous smartphones. When the power is out and the communications grid is down, I can still tell time and even use my watch as a rough compass. Can they?

If it’s not already apparent, I would like to win the MWC A-11 military style watch as a replacement for my decade old timex with the scratched plastic crystal.
