I loved the article on the bottle openers and went ahead and made one for myself, to see the difficulty of making it. After seeing how easy it was, I started working on making one for each of the males in my immediate family (even the newborn). Should be a kick ass group gift come Christmas morning!

And for women: the Kotatsu, or Japanese table: a low table at which one sits on the floor or on a cushion. And it also warms your legs and lower body!

I just built one for my girlfriend, spending about $40 and three hours. Difficulty: easy!

The trick is to use an incandescent light bulb as the heat source.

Great list. I would add a Shillelagh, a traditional Irish battle staff. (Perhaps you remember the one carried by Brendan Gleeson in Gangs of New York.)

Essentially, you cut the piece of wood you’d like to use (most prefer a knot or joint at the end). Sand and whittle it down to the shape and smoothness you desire. Then, rub it down from top to bottom with household butter. Finally, hang it in an oft-used chimney above a wood-burning fireplace. Leave it there for about a month.

I always mix up a few empty bottles of fruit-infused vodka and everybody loves em’. Cheap vodka, chop up fruit and shove in a empty vodka bottle, put the cap on and let sit in fridge for a week. I’m the hit of the party every year!

This comes at a perfect time as I was just trying to come up with gift ideas for my dad and brothers. I’m most likely going to do bottle openers for all three and a shoe shine box for my brothers. (My dad doesn’t dress up very often)

I’m digging the altoids tin idea. I have made things like this in boy scouts but have not done it since. The shoe shine box will be my gift to me this year.
