Enjoyed the read! Growing up in southern PA, snow would periodically get deep enough for snowshoes, and though I often thought about making/finding/buying a pair, I never did. Now I'm in AL, where an inch of powder sends everyone into a panic, and I wish I had tried snowshoeing when I had the chance. I guess this means I need to drive to snow to try it out! :)

Sure, Dave. Pop me an email.

As far as the 10th Mtn Division goes, there are amazing resources on the internet chronicling their many battles, especially going up the Appenines in Italy. Vicious stuff. I got sucked in while researching this piece and spent a few hours reading the reports of their maneuvers. Now I know what the officers were typing in Band of Brothers.

A note on the 10th Mountain Division discussion - I grew up in Denver, and also thought that the training for this division took place primarily at Camp Hale, near Leadville, CO. A bit of quick Wikipedia research (search "10th Mountain Division") revealed that the 87th Mountain Infantry Battalion was established at Fort Lewis, WA, and did indeed train on Mt. Rainier. This unit could be considered the precursor to the 10th Mountain Division. The 10th Mountain Division, however, did not exist until after Camp Hale was established in 1942.

As an aside, I camped once at Camp Hale as part of a Boy Scout Klonderee. At -27°F, this was my coldest temperature camping night ever! Good preparation (mentored by an excellent Scoutmaster) had us all well equipped and warm.

Nice Article but the 10th Mountain Division did most of their training near Leadville, CO.
Mt. Rainier must have been a field trip.

I started snowshoeing 2 years ago and its become my zen place. I now have a 42" and 48" pair of wooden snowshoes and love them. Got a modern pair last Christmas and they are good for crusty snow. If anyone has a pair of wooden snowshoes I can't stress frequent/proper varnishing with a marine varnish. They can last a lifetime if properly maintained!
