As more and more folks use mobile touch devices like iPads and smartphones to browse the internet, the challenge for online publishers is to customize their platform so that reading content is optimized for mobile viewing. We’ve had previous iterations of a mobile site for AoM before, but they were pretty rudimentary and didn’t work for tablet devices.
But now that’s changed. We’ve partnered with Onswipe to create a touch-friendly mobile version of AoM that looks and works like a dream on the iPhone (Android coming soon) and three of the most popular tablet devices on the market today.
We actually implemented the Onswipe mobile version of AoM about two months ago and did a small announcement via Twitter to get some feedback from folks as we worked out some bugs with the fine folks at Onswipe. The response to the new mobile site has been overwhelmingly positive.
And the analytics back up the anecdotal praise. Without even letting people know we have a touch-friendly version of the site, our engagement from mobile users has increased dramatically. According to Google Analytics, the number of visits from folks using iPhones has increased by nearly 7,000% in just two months. And people using their iPad to browse AoM are sticking around a lot longer: average time spent on the site went up over 200%. Sure, some people aren’t going to be happy with the changes (you can’t please everyone!), but the statistics show that lots of AoM readers are digging the new Onswipe mobile experience.
Here’s a sneak peak at some of the features you’ll find on our new mobile touch version of AoM.
Features
Clean, Magazine-like Layout

With the clean, magazine-like layout, articles are now much easier and more enjoyable to read on your mobile device. With the swipe-to-advance-to-the-next-article interface, you’ll feel like you’re flipping through your favorite magazine.
Easy-to-Use, Intuitive Touch Interface

The AoM + Onswipe mobile experience takes full advantage of the touch capabilities of today’s tablets and smartphones. Just swipe and tap to browse and read articles.

It’s so easy, even a toddler can do it! Do I see a hair sprouting on your chest, Gus?
Responsive Web Design

No matter how you orient your screen, the AoM + Onswipe mobile site will orient itself to match. Like to read your articles in portrait mode? Go ahead! Fancy yourself a landscape mode kind of guy? You can read AoM in that position, too.
Favorites

Create your own custom digest of your favorite Art of Manliness articles with the “Favorites” feature. Just tap the heart in the bottom right-hand corner to add it to your catalog (Requires Facebook account to use).
Share

Spread the Good Word of Manliness with just a quick tap. Help make the world manlier by sharing AoM articles you enjoy via Facebook, Twitter, or even email.
100% Free (Ad-supported)
We’re committed to ensuring the high-caliber articles on artofmanliness.com remain totally free, but for that to happen we need the support of advertisers. We’re able to provide this great mobile version of AoM thanks to advertisements that will appear every now and then as you swipe through articles. We’ll be working with Onswipe to ensure that ads adhere to the same high standards we apply to the desktop version of the site and don’t clutter up the mobile experience.
Works in Your Browser: No App Download Needed!
The AoM + Onswipe mobile site works in your mobile device’s browser. No download needed! Anytime you go to an artofmanliness.com url on your mobile device, you’ll automatically be directed to the mobile experience. (Of course, if you don’t like the mobile version, we make it easy for you to opt out with a “Desktop Mode” button.)
This Is Just the Beginning!
Onswipe is working hard to add more features to the mobile version of AoM to make it even better. Keep checking back on your touch device to see what’s cooking.
Devices Currently Supported

- iPad
- iPhone
The site looks slightly different on each device, but works pretty much the same whether you’re on a iPad or Nexus 7 — just touch and swipe to navigate through the site.
Coming Soon: Android smartphones. Look for it towards the end of the year!

I am an American living and working in Austria, and all of the tips in AoM have helped me integrate into the society here much easier as these articles helped me get rid of a lot of ‘Americanisms’ and start being a man. I’d be reading these articles on the subway to and from work, on lunch breaks, or when visiting the small villages by train that surround the area.
I also travel around the world with my job, so it would be a beautiful device to keep up on the latest news and become more aware of the world around me.
That case is awesome!!
on the balcony, most likely, with a pipe in hand.

I’ll be reading while sitting on the beach in Aruba on my honeymoon. Found this site while looking for groomsmen gifts and it gave me some great ideas. Keep up the great work!

With an iPad and manly Saddleback case I could read AoM anywhere there’s WiFi.
If you gave me this I would give it to a friend who I know would read AoM everywhere – and in manly style.
In bed with my fiancee where I can share the articles with her. Art of Manliness always makes her happy.
I am going to read in preparation for a program that I want to institute at the prison where I work. Inmates definitely need a lesson on the art of manliness.
in the shade with a hammock set up high in a tree, winding down from a hard day’s labor.
I will read AoM at the old wooden table in the kitchen, as I sip my coffee.
It’s 6:31 pm on the dot. The sun is softly cresting the pacific, going down for the night – a night I know is gonna be damn longer than I care to admit. I stare out and wonder if I’ll see the green ray that flashes just as the sun sets – but I can tell I’ve already missed it.
I glance down at my trusty iPad2 in its beautiful Saddleback Leather case. The two seem to be meant for one another. Kinda like Jillian and me – till she blew her top and left me high and dry in the mojave, but that’s another story. On the screen I see the iconic image of ‘HOLD FAST’ tattooed to a sailor’s knuckles, and I know that I’ve truly forgotten the man I always wanted to be.
But now’s not the time for regret. Not the time for idle musings. I can see him coming. I’ve never met the bastard before but I can tell from the poorly concealed bulge under his blazer. This guy’s never been to a tailor in his life – much less to one that would fit a jacket for a piece.
I dive for the pavement, rolling out of his line of fire. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. Almost empty. I draw my trusty handmade slingshot, grab a pebble from the ground and let her rip. A clean hit to his wrist knocks the gun to the floor and before he can reach for it, I’m at his throat.
Now I’m no fighter, but a couple hours a day on the heavy bag have given me the kinds of jabs & crosses that can make mince meat out of another man’s jaw.
In an instant his face is bloodied, his nose shattered; he looks to the ground and spits teeth. Not used to blood, I recoil at the sight. Damn idiot. It gives him just enough time to grab his piece and get a clean shot to my gut. He only had one bullet, and he made it count.
I wait for the life to fade from my eyes, but start to wonder why I’m not hurting more. It – it doesn’t hurt a bit.
The iPad2 was resting in my jacket’s oversized inner pocket. I slowly stand straight. I pull my trusty iPad from my jacket and see the bullet lodged in the saddleback case. It didn’t even make it through the leather.
The bastard in the suit pulls the trigger again and again. He should’ve learned to count.
I could’ve put him out of his misery then and there, but I knew better. Cause without The Art of Manliness… that slob’s a lost cause anyway.
I would read AoM in my garage while doing sets of POW squats in a suit and focusing on growing my beard
I will read AoM on my airplane!
I will read the art of manliness while I sip on Angel’s Envy Bourbon after closing the pub, worried that Crossfit at 5AM the next day will be all the harder because I’m not going to bed at a reasonable time. What the hell, I’ll handle it.
I would read AoM on the iPad while going on grad school visits.
All across Arkansas on my grand getting lost adventures of wedding photography,
I plan on reading this fantastic treasure trove of manliness, while deep sea fishing for Marlin off the gulf coast, while sipping a single malt whiskey (neat) and reveling in my accomplishments I have been enabled to overcome with the help of The Art of Manliness.
I would read AoM in Alaska, Zimbabwe, Ireland, England, Australia and China. I would read it to anyone who wants to be more of man and less of a not man.
I’ll be reading Art of Manliness while adventuring around the world. The new design looks amazing.
I’d read after the sergeants release us for the afternoon before I go home!
I would read it on my breaks at work and when I travel.
I’ll read it on campus at the University of Notre Dame.
I would read AoM from the seat of my Jeep after a fast training run on my favorite trails.
I would read on the back deck of my Cedar Crest home, overlooking the Sandia Mountains. Bushmills in had, Bullmastiff at my feet.
As an avid reader that has been dying to get an iPad I’d be delighted with this prize. If I’m so lucky to win I’m sure I would have it with me everywhere. That being said I’d likely read AoM everywhere as well. Great site. I’m glad I found it!
In a room filled with leather and mohagany furniture while drinking an old fashioned in front on a warm fire.
I would use this while wearing a cheap windbreaker whose hood keeps falling off, sitting on a wooden bench missing a slat, on the wet blustery steel deck of a ferry crossing from Vancouver Island to the mainland.
While taking care of my son when we are at home and on the go.
I’d be reading it while bouncing through the airports for work. Been needing an iPad for quite a while now; today may be my day!
It would go with me everywhere. Reading while sitting around a campfire underneath a sky full of stars, would be my favorite pick.
I would read AoM in-between my studying on campus. in-between my nervous breakdowns and my glorious triumphs!
In my parents basement… I DONT LIVE WITH THEM THEY LIVE WITH ME!!!!
I’ll read it on campus between classes, and at home between homebrews.
Dude, congratulations! Big step. I’ll be reading mine on my favorite sofa in the living room with the dog at my feet.
In bed…
I would read it anywhere I had a the opportunity, because of how portable the iPad is.
Anywhere I happen to be on Oahu.
If I won the IPad2 and that awesome case there are many places I would read it. At the barber’s while I am getting my Don Draper haircut and nice hot towel shave or possibly at the local watering hole while I’m enjoying a nice manly whiskey in the rocks.
I will read it on the bus to university.
I will be reading AoM on my Saddleback encased iPad at work during lunch break.
If I were fortunate enough to win, I would read my two year old son and my nephew’s stories about being a man. Responsible men are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and I believe that it is the responsibility of us men left to educate those that we can on what is the very essence of manliness.
