As far as keys go, I have always made a habit of just leaving them in my pocket, and I see no value to creating a different place for them (though, uncommonly used keys/work keys I could justify having a different spot... but as it stands, my keyring has very few keys on it). At worst, searching for my keys involves checking the pants I wore yesterday. Plus, if I keep my keys on my person, then when I pop outside I do not run the risk of locking myself out. Same is true of my Wallet - I just keep it on my person (though, if I kept it in my back pocket as so many do, then I might want to take it out for comfort sake).

Yeah, I think that wallet's pretty cool, too.

I've read elsewhere about the importance of being organized and how it can boost efficiency. I was watching a Brian Tracy video recently and he talked about how important this was.

A lot of people think having a cluttered desk makes them look busy. Instead, all it does is make them look overwhelmed and...well...cluttered.

Organization is a key component of efficiency. Thank God for Windows and the computer filing system.

As a note on filing Warranties/Receipts/Owner’s Manuals one of the best tips I was given before I got married was getting a three ring binder and the clear plastic page protectors. Place the owners manual and receipt inside it's own individual page protector. This way all of your manuals are together in one place and you can access it easily. It was easy for me to start as we opened our wedding gifts. Thanks for the post. There are some really great tips in here.

Great-grandfather's cigar box works pretty well for change and grandfather's old jewelry box works great for everything else, even though it isn't that big. It still holds most of my pocket knives, tie bars/pins, Rings, spare buttons and collar stays, keys sit nicely on top of it all. Unfortunately the wallet doesn't fit, but that is a price to pay for remembering my grandfather, who I never even got to meet.

By sheer chance, just as I was reading this a young lady on the TV told a story about what happened when she lost her bra. (No, it's not that sort of story, it's about the ramifications of being disorganised.) She eventually found it under her bed, but she could only reach it by reaching down behind the head of the bed - where she got stuck for twenty minutes.

My wife just doesn't get it when it comes to being organizedy Her motto is more along these lines:

Put it away, put it away,
Waste time searching another day!
Out of sight, out of mind!
Then when you need it you must find!

How do you deal with someone who has such a disorganized philosophy of mere "awayness" without having a specific place for things? I have actually taken six years to discover where she had put some things "away"! (After moving something from where I keep it she not only forgets where she moved it to, but then she also always, without exception, denies having moved it!) It's quite maddening living with such a disorganized person.

Brett,
Two things. First, my experience has been that having my smartphone on my belt on the same side as my wallet (I carry it in the front pocket) lead to temporary demagnetization of my credit cards. They eventually recover, but it's an unnecessary pain. Your wallet - while cool looking and compact - none the less seems to run the high risk of this.

Second, while a man can successfully do this sort of thing in his space, once he's married or living with a partner, it can become much harder. Perhaps as a follow-on, you and Kate could write a post about how to negotiate order in a joined household.

What I've found really helpful with my keys is I've stuck a Command hook up by the door. I come in, and hang them up. It's an easy habit, and it's done wonders for not losing my keys. It also helps me to remember to lock the doors.
And because it's in view, I can check that I've dealt with my keys from across the room when I'm frazzled.
