I just came upon AoM recently, and I love it. Ironically, it was during the week of my Father’s passing. I say that because my Dad was a true man. I was drawn to this article, because he served in the Army during WWII. I am forty years old, and feel that I have developed talents and skills over the years that I want to apply in life. Not only to make a contribution to society, but to be a better man. I was truly inspired by Ike’s quotes in the article. It’s easy to imagine how masterful he was in leading and developing the men under his command…and his contemporaries as well. Thank you for the excellent piece! I am excited at the prospect of learning more about “The Art of Manliness”!

Once again but this time it is blindingly obvious this article shows a good amount of perspective that is worthy of note. Great Brett and Kate! It seems like there is a before and an after your second book “Manvotionals” and you seem to use it as a cornerstone to build your vision of manliness and to share it with us so that we can interact about it and live maly lives. I love the way more and more topics about manhood are already covered and help you make links about other things that deserve some interest like the internet links scattered from top to bottom in the article show. Another outstanding article. Truly an inspiring leader. Another great resource on Ike and his peers (Marshall, Patton, MacArthur) is “19 Stars”, by Edward Puryear–it delves into their biography and then analyzes their leadership styles. Thanks for doing what you do!

What a gem this site is – and what a brilliant article. Preparedness presented in terms of preparedness of self, or conscious self-development, and thus about having developed the skills and personal qualities to shine in moments of crisis (or simply when the need or opportunity arises). And always timely to point out that – whether one faces the opportunity to achieve recognition or not, who one becomes as a person is a product of the choices we make, and the actions that we take throughout life. Always refreshing to study the lives of those who are remembered for their qualities and conduct throughout life, rather than fleeting “celebrity”. Marvellous read – thanks for sharing!
