I'm relatively new to this site but this is one of the only articles I disagree with. I think shorter shorts is a good look in my opinion, but that's likely because I dress quite preppy. Shorter shorts are becoming increasingly popular in fraternities and on college campuses, especially in the south. Also becoming popular is pairing shorts with a button-down shirt and the occasional blazer every once in a while.

Interesting article. However you did not mention how those baggy shorts make men's legs look like toothpicks from the knee down.

I'm with Bruce on this one. I'm in the states, but I don't follow that fad.
Regarding shorts, up until recently, I was not opposed to wearing below-the-knee shorts, like cargo type shorts, but now, I'm seeing way too much 'Saggy-Baggy Long-Dong' shorts ...what a turn-off!

I generally don't follow all the latest trends. Now, it's the Plaid, Saggy-Baggy look. I can remember wearing Plaids when I was a kid. At that time, I was thought of as being out of fashion and I was called a goofy nerd. Now, Plaid is in fashion. How'd that happen?

So, in the light of practicality, I prefer just regular mid-thigh shorts - they're just plain functional. Altho, everybody thinks that it's 'Gay' - it isn't. A lot of today's clothing styles lack intellect - just plain S**ty!

I'm always wearing shorts cuz they're comfy, and in the winter with a hoodie. I like wearing shorts to places where most others don't, the looks and comments you get sometimes are pretty sweet.
Also BTW why do you guys in the states always wear t-shirts under your shirts, even on hot days? (according to what I see on TV). I remember watching NCIS and here's Gibbs wearing a t-shirt under his long sleave thick-looking shirt, AND a jacket, in the office! Boy, he would have been sweltering! Meanwhile there's Ziva standing next to him in a thin strapped little number...go figure!

Being an Australian, as a kid I was always perplexed while watching the Brady Bunch why Greg, Peter and Bobby (and the dad for that matter) NEVER wore shorts, when out here EVERYONE did, and always did for as long as I can remember (I was born in '61). Even watching movies set in hotter parts of your country I would wonder why the hell weren't you guys wearing shorts on sweltering hot days! I must admit on more American TV shows these days shorts are getting more popular (Charlie on 2 and a Half Men). Most of our school uniforms (yes nearly all our government and private schools have uniforms) mostly feature dress shorts. Where I live on the Queensland coast (climate similar to Florida) shorts are everywhere.
BTW that photo of our soldiers is from WW2.
Cheers Mate!

The Nike Tempo track shorts we see women wearing a lot are the same type of shorts I wore in high school for P.E., track, cross country, and basketball. I wear them to run in and they are comfortable. I might get some strange looks, but the women like it. Yes, I get them form the women's section of the athletic stores.

Oh shorts. . . around here, men from here, just don't. Too much sun, and it just isn't done.

As an aside, during World War One the Australian army found that wearing shorts contributed to sometimes fatal leg infections for mounted men. Sweaty horses, sweaty men, flies, etc.

It might be "manly", but it's still pretty stupid not to care about how other people perceive you. When middle-aged men shuffle into the restaurant where I work dressed in shorts and flip-flops, I don't see "manliness", I only see slobbiness. Someone who doesn't care about how he's dressed usually also won't care about how he behaves, or whether or not the waiter gets a good tip. Bottom line: dress like a you give a crap.
