In the USA is the sidewalk (or pavement as it’s known in other parts of the world) considered the legal responsibility of the homeowner? Because where I come from it’s public property and is therefore the responsibility of the local authorities. Does Dim have the right to cordon it off and stop people walking on it? Because it seems pretty harsh to expect someone to maintain something that isn’t his property. Dim is taking a stand for justice, while Dash is just knuckling under and accepting oppression.

I love shoveling the driveway & sidewalk… I used to do the neighbor to the side & the widow across the road as well…

Nothing wrong with a little physical labour… My grandfather woulda been proud.

I live in Minneapolis, where it snows a gawdawful lot. The city owns the sidewalk, but if I don’t shovel it within 24 hours, well…

So I shovel down to the bare concrete, sometimes following through with a driveway broom to get the last of it (unlike some, whose snowblowers leave a thin layer to get packed into ice by pedestrians), and use salt and sand or kitty litter to make sure people don’t fall and kill themselves.

Out here where it doesn’t snow (much), the sidewalks “belong” to the city, but the care and maintainence belong to the house owner.

Dim would like to help, and does when he can.
But Dim is a real man, who has a real job, and is often away providing for his family, and the many people who work for him.
Snow shoveling and grass cutting are very low on Dim’s scale of importance.

So smart as* Dash should not be so smugbecause his soft job gets him home in time to look like a hero.

Dim, having read the previous AoM post about insurance and accepted his manly duty as described therein, has purchased an umbrella liability policy, and has thereby reduced his incentive (i.e., motivation) to take steps to avoid the financial liability that might follow a slip and fall on his property.

Dim is actually contributing to Climate change with his larger carbon footprint, ensuring milder winters and less snow to shovel in the first place. Dim is thinking big picture while Dash is only addressing a symptom and not the problem. Merry New Year!
