A really good active concealment device I discovered this year in high school is simply the ball point pen. There's actually quite of a bit of space between the ink tube and the inner walls of the pen. This has to be a pen that can be unscrewed and taken apart around the middle. From there, take a small slip of paper with a secret message (or test answers) on it and roll it tightly around the now exposed ink tube. Place back on the top of the pen, screw it on, and now you have a very discreet and fully functional pen message holder.
Oh, and the slip of paper has to be pretty small, or else it will wrap too thick around the ink tube and you won't be able to click the pen, or even screw back on the top.

Awesome article!

P.S. False coins are way older than that--there's a mention of prisoners using them to hide small saws in Les Miserables, published in 1862.
