This is great. I also think being self aware/ present to the moment during a conversation will help you be open minded.

Also “Seeking first to understand” an idea from Steven Covey is a great way to be open minded. Stepping into their shoes just for a second to see why they may feel the way they do, may open up your eyes a bit.

Either, the dogs from my unconscious were consciously pulled back and my gates were opened or this article is a well-known visitor. I’m not sure which one. But perhaps, in willing to entertain both possibilities, I’m letting my brain fall out.

Thank you for this succinct summary! Through reading this I realize that there is a lot more I can do to improve my own status as an educated man. (time to start learning some good jokes, I think) Another characteristic that could be looked at is: the ability to, not only entertain others through knowledge of a wide variety of subjects, but also apply that knowledge in practical ways.

Rather compelling way of underlining the importance of thinking.

There is distinction between having attended higher learning and being eduated. Some who hold degrees out the wazoo don’t display the characteristics outlined in the article while some self educated people show them in spades.

A true mark of an educated man is his willingness to admit his ignorance and the realization of the fact that no matter how much learning he has had acquired he still is not all knowing.
