Put Up Your Dukes! The Art of Manliness Pose Contest

When I was brainstorming what would become the Art of Manliness back in 2008, I wanted an image that would be the site’s calling card, an image that people would see and automatically think “Hey, that’s the Art of Manliness.” I wanted it to be sort of old-school, so I scoured tons of old ephemera (magazines, pamphlets, etc) from the past 150 years to find something that fit. After hours of searching, I found what I was looking for.

It was a picture of famous 19th century bare knuckle boxer John L. Sullivan striking a manly fisticuffer pose while sporting an awesome handlebar mustache. I slapped him in the header to serve as the virile and rugged balance to the well-mannered gentleman on the other side. Together they form the two aspects of manliness we talk about on AoM.

Show Off Your Art of Manliness Pride: The AoM Pose Contest

Are you an Art of Manliness man? Are you a guy who’s dedicated to bringing back real manliness and making the corner of your world a little manlier each day? We want you to show off your Art of Manliness pride by taking a picture of yourself striking your best AoM pose.

See John L? That boxer guy at the top of the site?  See how he has his two fists up?

We’ll call it the “AoM Pose” for brevity’s sake. Any person who assumes this pose will feel 100 times manlier. Go ahead–try it!

Did you feel the testosterone course through your body? Of course you did.

Are you feeling inspired now? Good. Here’s how you can enter this contest.

Step 1. Join the Art of Manliness Community.

Step 2. Take a picture of yourself striking your best AoM Pose. You can get as creative as you want with your picture. So long as you have your two dukes up, you’re golden. Have fun!

Step 3. Upload the photo to the Art of Manliness Community Photo Page.

Deadline to submit is Wednesday, August 10, 2011 by 11:59:59 PM CDT. You can upload your photos anytime before or on that day.

Selecting the Winner

After we receive the photos, we will pick the 5 best entries and post them on the site. Starting August 16, 2011 and running until August 23, 2011 voting will be open to the public at The Art of Manliness website. The AoM Pose with the most votes by 11:59 PM CDT will be named the winner.

The Prizes

Grand Prize: For such a virile contest, we couldn’t think of a manlier prize than a large coffee brown Saddleback Leather briefcase. John L. Sullivan would battle a hundred men at the same time for a hundred rounds to win such an awesome briefcase.

In addition to the briefcase, the Grand Prize winner will  also get one of everything in the Art of Manliness shop:

And here’s something awesome. The winner will get a signed copy our new book Manvotionals: Timeless Wisdom and Advice on Living the 7 Manly Virtues before it is even released. Imagine the manly pride you’ll feel knowing you’ll be the first man on the block to own this masterpiece of a book.

Total retail value of Grand Prize: $675!

First runner up:  Our first runner-up will receive an AoM prize package that includes our two AoM posters, an AoM T-shirt of their choice, and a signed copy of our first book The Art of Manliness: Classic Skills and Manners for the Modern Man.

I’ve been too lazy to enter any of these contests before (even the ones that only require you to leave a comment), but this contest is too manly to pass up.

I struck the pose. I didn’t feel any testosterone, but I did feel rather fierce.

7 beer_jedi July 26, 2011 at 7:58 am

Don’t you mean Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader?

8 nerd July 26, 2011 at 9:13 am

No, he means Luke in “Empire Strikes Back”

9 Frank July 26, 2011 at 9:31 am

As an avid AOM reader for over a year, I must say I am very dissapointed to see this is for American readers only. Has this always been the case with give-away’s? I would like to know what the reason is for this. I am a Canadian, but I sure do enjoy this site.

11 Jérôme July 26, 2011 at 10:07 am

@ beer_jedi:

Nope. I meant, as nerd already said, luke; his answer to darth vader, when he tells him that he is his father.

>> Nooooooooooooooo. <<

In regards to the contest being open to Americans. It’s a legal thing. Every country has different laws when it comes to giveaways/contests. Some would even require that I register and pay a fee if I want to open it up to their citizens. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time or money to research and accomodate all these different laws. Its hard enough doing that with 50 different states.

I wish it could be could be different. Maybe one day when we become an a giant multinational corporation of manliness.

I can’t wait to see all these delightfully manly photo entries! I’d better have my smelling salts at the ready.

14 Guy July 26, 2011 at 12:21 pm

Ha….I got rid of my handlebar too soon.

15 Richard P. Ervin July 26, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I am related to John L. Sullivan. His Sister, Madelline, was my Great Great Grandmother. As a child, I read about him and often practiced the “pose”, some times in a combative nature, I might add. I still feel the testosterone, even at my age!

16 Will July 26, 2011 at 3:06 pm

If you are going to use a quote from a movie, make sure it is something better than “noooooo” There are millions of movies with that line. lol

BTW – great site.

Great contest idea! The prizes are awesome! I’ll definitely tell my boyfriend and brother to enter. The bag is my favorite item up there!

18 Walter Walko Hutchinson July 26, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Good luck to all who can enter!

19 nathan July 26, 2011 at 7:45 pm

20 Aaron July 27, 2011 at 11:02 am

I’m just glad that that unmanly crease was finally ‘shopped out of the poor fellow’s bicep.

21 Brett McKay July 27, 2011 at 11:35 pm

Just one picture per person–so give it your best shot!

22 McK July 29, 2011 at 12:56 am

100 times more manly pshhh… don’t be ridiculous you’ll feel at least 100,000 times as manly

23 Daniel July 29, 2011 at 6:31 pm

Nice grand prize! I already got that manly briefcase from my wife for Christmas last year. I used the bag last weekend in Nassau during a port call to bring 6 bottles of Bahamian rum back to the ship. Trust me – that is one manly bag!

Good luck to all!

24 Usman August 5, 2011 at 11:41 am

25 Steve August 9, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Hah, I’m late to the party, as often happens. I gotta see if I can get my camera working in the next 24 hours! This is great stuff!
