Robert Bly (Iron John, Book of Human Shadows) may have a lot of worthwhile to say but he prefaces it in a dark, socialist perspective. If you don’t believe as he does politically, you are not only wrong, or even disfunctional, you are evil. If you should decide to read “Iron John” anyway, skip the author’s forward pages. That’s an offensive bell that I wish could be unrung.

Be a Man, Becoming the Man God Created You To Be by Father Larry Richards is enlightening for the general reader as well. Excellent.

I’m a therapist in California, practicing with much focus on men’s issues. Some years ago I read the book “Iron Man Family Outing”, a collection of poems by Rick Belden. This collection gets my vote as one that belongs on this list. With over a hundred offerings, these sometimes terse and explicit, sometimes elaborate and oblique poems delivers upon the promise of its subtitle: an exploration into manhood. Rick is raw, honest, and wistful as he expresses a shadowy fear of women (“hooked”); bemoans the marginalization of male elders (“Another fact of life”); meanwhile, poems like “Acceptance” offer statements for determination and hope.

One thing some people forget about self-help books is they are meant to give some helpful advice that you integrate into your personality. They are not for insecure people to completely scrap their personality and replace it with an archetype from a book.My brother said he new at least one person who forgot this when he read “Wild at Heart.” It’s tough for a book to give universal advice, anyhow, but the good reader will filter it for himself.
