There is a big difference between pride and self-esteem, one not many people understand. The popular understanding of humility seems to be self-deprecation, which is actually a form of pride! The world will respect, even salute a man who knows who he is and can't be shaken by anyone else's opinion, and doesn't need to tell the rest of the world.

I may not like my situation, and I'm not perfect, but I sure do like who I am. I am a MAN, others' opinions be damned!

Wow...I am not a very proud person. Of course I realize how stupid and hypocritical that might sounds. I don't boast of myself openly but I see myself in a lot of what is illustrated and feel I am guilty of pride in many other more subtle ways and am glad to have read this and realize.

Great article.

I wonder....Once you have lost the respect of others, (by eating dirt), is there any way to bounce back from that. That's a long row to hoe. Once people have seen that they can make a fool out of you once, twice, or multiple times, it would be hard to pass yourself off as a meek and humble gentleman. Perhaps not impossible. For some, the possiblity of removing yourself from those that have lost respect for you may seem like a better solution than putting the work in to redeem yourself. What do you all think? Flee or face it? How would you go about redeeming yourself?

If we lived up to half of what we said or thought about ourselves the world would be filled with a lot more useful men. This reminds me of a short talk on TED by Derek Sivers on keeping your goals to yourself. Good article

Great! I have experienced a similar "coming to Truth" concerning false pride. Painful but powerful lesson, but then aren't the most powerful lessons all painful? Keep up the good work! Much appreciated!
