I agree, I only went in the ring once & lost but it was a great experience, I wouldn't necassarily want to go through it again though.
On the day of the fight I woke up terrified & hoped it would go away but it didn't until about an hour before the fight when a strange calm came over me.
I was poor defensively & my fitness was not perfect but I landed some good shots until it was stopped in the 3rd round, not by KO but stoppage.
I never regretted it & the ring is unmerciful, it exposes your every weakness & that you hope to learn from even if victory is not yours.

Thank you for this series. I've been hitting the heavy bag as part of my workout routine, and imagined getting in the ring at some point. Didn't know all of the steps that it took and certainly didn't know that I'd have to pay. Guess I won't be doing it.

There is nothing like it-- Nothing like staring down your opponent one-on-one waiting for that first bell to ring; Nothing like all 200 people in a packed PAL gym focused on just you; Nothing like like getting caught flush with a punch you never saw, and momentarily forgetting where you are; And absolutely nothing compares to having your hand raised at the end of a fight.

We live for this. People who've never stepped in between those ropes will never understand.

Thank you so much for this information! I'm an aspiring fighter and I've been studying the sweet science for almost a year, I plan to fight this summer hopefully. Nonetheless, this answered a lot of my questions and I greatly appreciate this.

That last paragraph is true. If you do more reading and watching videos than roadwork, don't get in the ring. If you are not going into a fight with the attitude that you are going to give all you got , or he knocks you out, don't get in the ring. Remember , before you set foot in that ring, your opponent is going to win unless you knock him out , or knock him down enough times that he no longer wants any more of you, or he is not able to physically continue the fight. This is the difference of "talking the talk" and "walking the walk". Don't try to fool yourself. ED

I just started boxing a month ago, and I am looking forward to what the author described. As Mr. Setlur said, that last paragraph was made to elicit an emotional response, and I think that it did the job. Now I cannot wait for my first bout. It might be many hours of practicing away, but it is that first fight for which I hope.

And cheers to all the guys I know (and of course those of you I don't) who are competitive boxers. Keep up the good work.
