A pocket notebook is the still the best device I know to capture information and thoughts in a timely fashion. I use mine to move my life forward.

It is said that you co not know who you are or what you think until you write it down. I find, time and time again, that this is a very true statement. It’s the reason why I carry small, pocket-sized notebooks with me.

Perfect self-actualization is an impossible task, but intimately understanding one’s own thoughts and motivations is a must in this hectic world. Blogs certainly help (it’s the only reason I maintain one), but there is no substitute for putting pen to paper.

I write for a living, and burn through several pocket notebooks a year keeping track of daily minutia (todo lists, phone numbers, etc.), legitimate notes for paying projects, the fleeting ideas that will hopefully germinate, and a daily diary of anything that’s worth noting (since I bike to my office and live with a four year old, I seem to see a lot every day, most of it absurd).

I use my notebook to jot down to-do lists, make horrible doodles that amuse me, and it gives me something to put in my front pocket. Every great man needs to own and use some type of ledger consistently.

I use my pocket notebook to make notes- on things that I find interesting( biking, hiking trails camp sites), important (dates, gifts- Saddleback leather wallet), moral (virtues and instances when a virtue maight be in question) or anything that can make me a better person (eating healthy working out books to read). My goal is to put together a book for my heirs to read and to pick up where I have fallen short. A cross between Stone Wall Jackson’s Maxims and Lord Chesterfield.
