One thing I've heard about Muay Thai is that its only really a young man's sport and fighting art and another thing I've heard is that Muay Thai fighters get bone cancers because of the fact that they have a lot of bone to bone clashes.

Can anyone shed any light on these things?

What I enjoy about being a modern man is being able to be inspired by all areas, be it the sciences, the arts, or athletic endeavors. While martial arts may seem brutal and vicious at times, the lessons learned in the gym vary from respect to perseverance. Not everyone learns in the same manner and having these avenues opened can reach some who are not reachable through traditional means. While I do not agree with all articles in this website, I do understand that others do and it is my goal as a man to respect others' choices as others have respected mine. That being said, thank you for opening up your experience to us.

Michael - why does the fact that violence is "a leftover from our remote ancestors" make it necessarily bad? We, as humans, really are simply more efficient apes - what's wrong with that? Don't get me wrong, I don't think someone who only indulges in our basic animal desires while ignoring our more uniquely human traits is living a good, fulfilling life. However I think those who try to deny our basic animal nature are not necessarily any better. Not to mention muay thai training takes commitment, hard work, determination, courage, respect, and a whole host of other characteristics that I would consider admirable in any man, or woman for that matter!

Is this what we as men aspire to become?? This and all other violence of this nature is a leftover from our remote ancestors who hadn't developed thinking yet. You see such behavior among children and so-called lower animals that haven't been civilized.
I don't care that you call it sport, it still is doing something you'd expect from wild dogs or bears but they do such things for a purpose such as obtaining food or mating priority.
Lets aspire to become better scientists, communicators, lovers and friends to others not more efficient apes!

This is great. I may actually spend the next coming year in Thailand and had thought to try to find some training in Mauy Thai. I already train as a boxer here in the states. So I couldn't go a year without some sparing. Looking forward to getting more info!

Funny, I don't get the impression that the two guys saying that the rolling a bottle on your shin thing is a myth have ever actually trained in Thailand. I trained there for a year and the veteran, experienced Thai trainers taught me to do the bottle rolling thing. Just because it isn't taught at a shopping mall school in Omaha, doesn't make it a myth.
