I am currently waiting for the next test for the Fire Department of the City of New York, and I thought his point paralled nicely with the current tests situation. There is so much talk about these tests and the job itself being racist, but I can’t help feeling that maybe they just don’t want the job. It’s a tough point to make in the current racist/sexist/etc. climate and the I think Dr. Baumeister made it very well. Great podcast!

It seems now that women are starting to have the same professions and better pay we’re at either one or the other end of the spectrum.

Roy Baumeister is my favorite social psychologist (even above Philip Zimbardo), and a professional hero of mine. When I talk about the psychology of warriorhood in my book, I draw heavily on Baumeister’s work on self-control.

My Personal Baumeister Story: I was at an academic conference in Toronto (International Network on Personal Meaning) a couple of years ago, Baumeister was the keynote speaker, and I was asked to introduce him. Yay! I had my introduction all set and ready to go… and then Baumeister walked up to the mic and started talking without any introduction. I was crushed.
