Very nice article! Truly, every man needs a place of his own, just to maintain your sanity and enable you to make your mark on the world. How in heaven’s name are you ever going to receive any kind of greatness while you’re constantly surrounded by hordes of women and children, who are all constantly making their demands on you? One thing tho: Why stop here? It would be VERY interesting to continue this article to cover the sanctuaries of other great (or at least important) men. I agree with mr DeJohn: Seeing what Lee’s study looked like would be rather interesting, and what about Stalin’s, for instance? Even though he was a monster, he also affected the lives of millions, if not billions of others. Wouldn’t you want to know what his “man cave” looked like? I know I would!

Great article, but…you have Muir…you have Darwin…you have Frederick Douglass….plenty of left-wing weenies…how about showing Robert E. Lee’s room at Arlington (before the damn Yankees stole his home), where he paced the floor all night, forced to be decide between betraying either his country or his Commonweath? Or is that too much gravitas for the politically correct, neutured, modern “guy?”

Great article. I enjoy this site very much. The funny thing is I’ve been living and doing most of the things you talk about since I got out of high school. I’m a straight razor soap and brush, suit wearing man, and a Mason. I’ve had a Man Room for some time now, although I call it “my study”. No one in my family goes in there or bothers me, “its my space”. I spend most of my at home free time in My Study; with a wife and 3 kids its very nice to have, to just get away, relax, smoke my pipe, read a good book or something online, hang with a friend, play chess, and look around at my favorite things. I highly recommend all men to have a room or 2 for themselves, to decorate to their tastes. It definitely makes family life easier and more enjoyable. All Ladies should treat their men to a nice Man Room. 1 room isn’t to much to ask for in a entire house of rooms. Kipling’s and TR’s rooms are my favorite style rooms, but saying that I prefer Tudor Gothic architecture. My next favorite spot is the Billiard room for Snooker and Cognac Brandy.

I’ve been wanting to build a cabin in the woods for a while now. BTW TMM, I visited Thoreau’s cabin during a high school field trip, but I don’t think I could live in something that small. It pretty much is the size of a closet. Thats not a twin size bed pictured, its about as a big as a love seat.

Along the topic of man caves I am looking forward to having one of my own. I think Mark Twain’s hut and billiards room are the two best on here. Now I just need to save enough to have the extra space in the house to accomodate the space. My soon to be wife has conditionally agreed to my creating a man cave just so long as she gets her lady lair.
