I found this extremely interesting and this is all these different tribes of different countries know. While I certainly know some of these rituals are incredibly painful I believe that they have the ability to not suffer as much as someone who would come in from an area where nothing like this takes place. They learn to condition their minds so the suffering while very painful is less painful than one might think. A type of mind over matter. Matt A I hope your mission to Paris was wonderful. I’m not criticizing what you wrote, but a mission such as that would be more rewarding than painful.

the added information that Art of Manliness provides to this topic is
very valuable. My college students will
certainly be able to claim their manhood, and my women will appreciate that their rituals are also vital to their personal growth.

1) Some of these seem to point to homosexual gratification/abuse (a bit like certain sects of Jewish rabbi’s being asked to bite off a baby’s foreskin) 2) Some of them are ‘all show’ no real pain, like the ants are not going to be ‘sewn in’ and are not going to bite for nothing and the bungy jumping which is now considered tame and quite easy to calculate – tons of women & men do base-jumping which is higher risk for fun 3) Considering girls were probably also FGM’d are these ‘rituals’ really more painful than what every woman would have to go through in childbirth without anaesthetic (particularly being underage ie in fatally excruating pain with hips too small to give birth)? 4) There seems to be only one account of the Mandan tribe ritual is that not suspicious? I do not understand how (if it was for all boys) how they survived in sufficient numbers not to create a skew in gender numbers? 5) Unless you prefer prancing around showing off your mutilated d*ck, there are more ways than ever to be an alpha (male or female or transexual) via education.

Okay I consider myself to be extremely open minded about the beliefs of other people and am accepting of them. However that deosen’t mean I’ll not form my own opinions of them and quite frankly I feel that the sambia tribes ritual isn’t insane at all but I will state that I think it is a guise for ritualized homosexuality and wonder what or who started it.

I think it’s hilarious that website says that the “most insane” manliness ritual is not being hung from the ceiling by your own skin, being poisoned, being tortured for hours and hours, or being forced to eat part of your own penis. No, the most insane ritual is giving another man a blowjob.

My god! The inhumanity!! Next they might even be expected to…cook dinner!?! NOOO!!

I guess us ladies are about as manly as it gets.

I enjoy reading about others rites of passage into manhood. In my extended family it is the day you take the life of your first deer and shed his blood on your hands. you do not kill the animal but rather change its meaning in life. you must eat the flesh of the animal or else you are just a cruel sportsman. hunting is a way of life for us not a sport. we eat nearly all we kill and are proud to call ourselves hunters.

i have attempted many rituals after my 18th birthday, but it comes to find out that anything that isnt southern baptist christian is illegal in tennessee. so im moving to cali to get my body modification license and i plan on doing weekly suspensions. as of now i have piercings and tattoos and im stretching my ears

I don’t know if anyone here has any experience with Mormons or Mormonism here, and I certainly do no want to get into any sort of religious debate, that isn’t why I’m posting. But I am 19 and leaving to serve a full time mission for the LDS church this Wednesday. I have been called to Paris, France, and I think that even if you are completely anti religion, you have to admit that the LDS missions are a pretty incredible rite of passage. You are right out of high school, in your prime, and suddenly you are called to a destination that is completely unknown to you when you apply. I look forward to hopefully returning an adult with some experience.
