Thanks for a great article. Although I grew up on the edge of the Lake District and spent much of my youth and early adulthood exploring it, I have never come across Millican Dalton before. How I wish I had!

On my travels over the years, I have certainly encountered numerous poorly-run production facilities (and surprisingly so, both overseas and in the UK), China included. This experience has given us the opportunity to make the right choices in our own production, both in the UK and in China.

I’ve not been to China’s sweatshops, so I cannot comment on them. I have a friend, however, whose mission in Vietnam is to build village businesses that allow women and others to be gainfully employed near their families and children, instead of having to travel to the cities and leave their families. Their lives are enriched without being diminished, and they do fine work. If Millican produces their products in such places I shall gladly use them. I do not know if that is so… but I do not know otherwise either. Were I to draw a conclusion I suppose I would have to first research the facts.

Nice that Millican’s (the company, not the late eccentric) “traditional” products are made in China’s sweatshops while pretending to have a whiff of the Lake Country.

Great post. It reminds me of Richard Proenneke, who worked for years and then retired to the Alaskan wilderness and built himself a cabin where he lived for like 30 years. Is there a good biography out there for Mr. Dalton?

I’ve never heard of him before either. Do you think it’s still possible to live like this in Western countries or are there some bureaucratic laws which says you can’t live like that now?

7 great lessons–especially the one about living for whatever you are passionate about. When you love what you do your work doesn’t really “feel” like work most of the time. Life is too short to live without passion.

I actually never heard of Dalton Millican before, but I now know a good deal about this great man. He was a true example of manliness!
