Naming is fun, and it's a "womanly" job too. Congrats to Mark for spinning it so it worked on this site! And getting such a nice thorough article.

Speaking of fun, I am a product namer too, with my own company. My current and future project is me "having THE most FUN job in the world," without any downsides.

So along with naming other people's products, I have named my own. It's a brand, describing the FUN people over 50 (and late 40s too.) Twifties! Because 50 is the new 20.
Twenty+50= TWIFTY!!
RU Twifty?
Spread the word!

Great interview Mark, though as someone in the business I'm more than a little concerned that you revealed the most confidential and sacred aspect of naming process to all and sundry --

"...making a list on a piece of light-green graph paper, with a purple Flair pen."

Not the s**t's gonna' hit the fan! We may all be out of work soon, now that the secret to great naming is out. Then again, I could use a vacation, so what the hell. Great work!

Cheers,

Awesome interview. I loved the way Mark engaged the questions and was so free and enthusiastic in his responses. I imagine this interview would have been fantastic even if the job being discused weren't so interesting, just because Mark is interesting. Thank you, Brett and Mark.

Great interview, Mark!

As a fellow man and brand namer, I wanted to comment on the issue of manliness.

What's manly about naming?

Immortality: The names we give products and companies can last forever. Our work can live and breathe and earn client's money and accrue value long after we're gone.
In Greek epics, warriors intimidated the enemy with taunts that their name would be forgotten upon death; immortality meant your name would be remembered. A namer's work is his proxy; as long as his brand names live, so does he.

Billions of dollars: The cumulative value of the products and companies we've named can easily reach billions of dollars. Money is power. Power is manliness.

Strength: Namers have to be fearlessly creative, independent and unconventional thinkers. Their minds must be fertile and able to father hundreds of names. Channeling King Solomon, namers judge their offspring and kill the weakest. They pick favorites that soon are slaughtered in trademark screening. Whatever names survive this gauntlet is presented to the client who may deride and denigrate the progeny. Even -- or especially -- in the face of opposition, the namer must stand tall and confident, using their wits and impassioned reason to rally support. Eventually, it's the namer who, when all legal screening is said and done, must crown one of their children, leaving the others to perish.

As Mark said, naming requires thick-skin. It requires confidence. It requires manliness.

Very cool job, very cool interview, very cool man.

But just one bit of advice for Mark-if he's working with brands and must market himself, he really should invest some money in a much better website. His current one is rather, well, 90's-tastic. Not very enticing for someone who is looking to hire him for his professionalism and creativity.
