I've got a few standbys for these problems. Cologne wise, it's either Hugo Boss, Girgio Armani, and Victorinox Classic or Mountain Water. I also wear Adidas Dynamic Pulse cologne and aftershave, along with Clubman.

Breath wise, it's the new Crest in the blue and white tube. Mouthwash is usually Listerine cavity control. It may be purple, but it burns like lava. And then I'm also a devotee to Altoids Smalls and Wrigley's 5ive gum.

@43 Eddie: The easiest, cheapest and most effective way to de-scent garments that you can't wash frequently is to spray them with vodka and let them air-dry overnight.

It's an old theatre trick for freshening costumes - though they usually (at least in the costume shops I've been in)add detergent to the spray bottle to keep the dressers from drinking it ^_^. It works like a charm on carpets and drapes too.

Also, a word on foot odor. Scrub your feet in the shower every day with soap and shower brush. Change your socks everyday. Don't wear shoes in the house - let your feet breathe. Use odor eater inserts in your shoes and spray the insides of your shoes with a good foot odor spray each day.

I think its important to find out what your "base" smell is going to be and then make sure that you accent it with everything else. For example, if you really like the smell of your body wash, then use a lighter fragrance deodorant or non-scented. I think that non or mild scented detergent is the way to go, and personally I don't use fabric softener. Its like cheap cologne and makes your clothes all greasy feeling. They also fall apart quicker and many types actually recommend that you don't use them, like nike dry-fit and underarmor. Its ok to use fabric softener, liquid or sheets, with your towels or linen, but wash your jeans inside out in cold water with no softener, and you can wash them every time you wear them and they'll last just as long as if you don't wash them for 6 months (gross, man).

good reminder- need to start using the tongue scraper again---especially with 3 cups of coffee per day! Also, I need to get another Sonicare toothbrush. Those things do a GREAT job- and fast. Unfortunately they are not all that durable- I burned through two in a year and a half. The Pro line, not the cheaper Kmart one.

I generally have avoided cologne. too much risk. I think you HAVE to ask your main squeeze what she thinks. Let her apply it- let her offer an opinion after it's been on half the day. It's practically impossible to gauge this yourself.

In my case I am lucky enough that my excellent wife bought me what she thought was going to be good for me. I trusted her and I wear it. I like it fine- and she likes it. Marc Jacob. I tend to wear it like a nice sweater. Not everyday, but when I need to feel a bit of an extra boost or when we are going on a date or on vacation. that way there's a lot of positive reinforcement that goes with the scent- such as going to the nice restaurant, or that great day on the Cape.

I also wore Burts Bees Bay Rum for a while. The aftershave slap-on was kind of nice.

I use Old Spice Pacific Surge- jsut because it's the least offensive of any of the men's deodorants. I have no need for anti-perspirant. I'd love to find a deodorant that really worked and was scent-less. There's a lot of competition that goes on between your shampoo, conditioner, soap and deodorant! Add cologne to the mix and whoo-boy- there could be some funky conflicts.

I am amused by the names of mens deodorants which are so aggressive! Surge...Blast...Attack!

One easy way to keep the private areas of men fresh is to apply baby powder in the morning after drying from your shower. It will keep you fresh, dry and great smelling all day long. Your wife/gf will really appreciate it.

I think that using mouthwash to clean your tongue is like using a hose to clean a carpet. I have found that tongue scrapers work pretty well and you'll feel it the first time you use one. I highly recommend using a tongue scraper :)
