Fantastic. Just came back from holidaying and was amazed at the new layout. In particular I love the images of Victorian era gentlemen, which gives the website a great vintage feel.

Site looks sleek but one BIG ISSUE -

You can’t view all the comments on a post. Take the popular post “100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library”. I’d like to see the commentary by fellow users but the “previous comments” link does do much except take you to a page devoid of all comments.

I know the autoplay ads are annoying, but they’re necessary right now to keep the blog going. They should only play for you the first time you visit the site, and then never ever again. If they’re playing for you multiple times, please let me know.

As regards the redesign, I have only one gripe: I really, really do not like videos or sound that start to play automatically when the page is opened. If I want to watch or listen, I will click on it. If I don’t, you have made me take an unnecessary step in shutting it down.

I really like the new site. And the pages load fast on all of my computers. (There is still a glitch in the header graphics, when viewed with Safari on a MAC. See this screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/pIyA09Zb

I actually think the site loads a lot faster now. Which is nice, because I was getting frustrated with how slowly the old site loaded.

Just wanted to note: Load times on slower connections (I’m on a verizon 3G broadband card right now) are a bit slower since the redesign… part of the problem is that there are a lot of huge graphics (like the background image) that take a while to load in. Also, the flash video that autostarts causes everything to be put on halt.

You might want to look into at least making everything wait until the end of the page load before starting…
