Chris Hutcheson, one of AoM’s outstanding contributors, and the author of such awesome posts as yesterday’s piece on Adventure Books, is trying to raise money for Childreach International and needs the the help of you, the fine readers of the Art of Manliness.
Childreach International is a charity that supports child-centered community development in Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, India and Nepal and works to effect long-term change in the lives of the most vulnerable children and families.
The charity’s recent focus in Tanzania has been on sanitation and sustainable water facilities. There are many large communities throughout the country that have little or no access to a reliable supply of fresh water and many schools and other educational institutes that have either out-dated or no sanitation facilities. By providing wells and sustainable sanitation facilities, Childreach is helping alleviate this problem.
Childreach’s projects in Tanzania also focus on education. One program, the Schools Improvement Program, aims to improve the facilities at community primary schools, creating a better learning environment. Another program, the Youth Training Scheme, focuses on the creation and sustainment of community based vocational schools which provide youth with the skills necessary to break out of the poverty cycle they often find themselves trapped in. Skills taught include carpentry, tailoring, IT, and mathematics.
Childreach utilizes many innovative fundraising techniques in an effort to fund these programs. Most prominent are their challenge events, where volunteers seek sponsorship for extreme activities, such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and cycling across Nevada’s Death Valley. Hutch will be joining one of these programs as he and a small team set out on a six day climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania via the Machame route. Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. It stands at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) above sea level.
