It's a little presumptuous to believe that the founder of the group has not examined the reasons for doing so, and yet come to a different conclusion as you. And if you felt that way, why would you read AoM, which is founded on similar assumptions?

Also, while your statistics about Congressmen are true, I'm willing to bet that the ratio of women to men who run for office is similarly lopsided. And yet men and women have equal access to office, so I do not think that's a good example of privilege.

At the end of the day I cited stats and you cited stats, and there could be more cited on each side. A man versed in the way the legal system discriminates against men would have a field day. The fact that both sides have stats says to me that there is indeed a need for groups to help men improve just as there is need for groups to help women.

And yet we still make a buck for every 80 cents women earn; 83/100 Senators are men; 441/435 Representatives are men, and 85% of Fortune 500 corporate officers are men.

Median teacher salaries (for a bachelor's degree) hover in the 40-45k range. That's for experienced teachers. Starting salaries for a computer science degree are around 50k. Men outnumber women in that field about 3 to 2.

Not that we shouldn't strive for self-improvement, but there's no point in founding anything on unexamined privilege.

"Society" hasn't been as kind to men lately. To quote the article:

The group's birth comes at a time when the recessionary ax has fallen especially hard on men. In April, the national unemployment rate for men was 10 percent compared with 7.6 percent for women, said Mark Perry, an economist at the University of Michigan in Flint.

That gap is an "all-time historical high," said Perry, who attributed it in part to a loss of jobs in male-dominated fields such as manufacturing and construction.

At the same time, he noted, women today hold about three out of the four jobs in education and health care -- both stable or expanding job fields.

Future employment is also an issue, some experts say. Since 1981, women have collected 135 for every 100 bachelor's degrees awarded to men, according to Perry. The gap is even wider at the master's level, with women trumping men 150 to 100, he said.

I really enjoyed the article today about the history of boxing. However, I am very disappointed, and apalled, that there was not even the slightest mention of one of the greatest boxers of the twentieth century--Rocky Marciano!!!
