The Stronglifts 5x5 really works. I have been following the program from February and now am able to lift 1.5x my body weight in squats. I don't look buff, but like you mentioned before it is more important to have functional strength than to look buff. If I had more money to feed myself more I think my progress will go even further.

Stronglifts, highly recommended.

Another great program (and what is manlier than pushups) is the simple and easy to follow 100 push ups (http://hundredpushups.com/).

I got about halfway through the program and joined a gym so I changed my workout routine but its a great, low-impact, no-cost way to get back into working out (or get into it for the first time).
