New to AOM, but reading Duncan's comment made me think back to when I first watched "Band of Brothers." I remember seeing the men shaving at Bastogne in the dead of winter and thinking "How could they shave in those conditions," but shaving just may have been the one comforting thing that took their minds off of the fact that they were on the business end of German artilery. Duncan hits it on the head; we don't need grooming products to enjoy the ritual and escape of a shave.

Hey, this Pato guy sounds suspiciously like my little brother. Bald guy....really cool house? Is that you little 'bro? Me thinks that you need to put down the J. Daniels, back away from whatever Hemingway novel you're reading, and put some Hank Sr on that Oh-so-cool stereo of yours. I can tell you right now there will be no "morning ritual" when we're on the road to Dad's place next month. Leave the mustache wax and "chamber pot" at home please. I am cool with the kippers though.

I rarely shave in the morning. I like to go to bed feeling fresh and clean.
I strop my razor before I take my bath, then I fill a scuttlewith steaming hot water and allow my brush to soak while I bathe or shower.

Ater showerng I shake some of the hot water from the brush, and then whip up a hot lather from either Ogallala Bay Rum soap or The Gentlemens Quarter Cavendish Black soap. I make 3 passes, once with the grain of my beard, once against the grain (chin to cheek) and once across the grain (from ear to nose). After each pass I re-apply the warm lather with the brush, which acts as an exfoliant.

I prefer to use a straight razor, as they are good for the environment as well as the face. When you have the knack, they leave you as smooth as the proverbial babys bottom. I top my shave off with Ogallala bay rum aftershave skin toner or Old Spice.

It is gratifying to know that the razor I am using to take the whiskers from my face couldve been used by one of my forefathers and that their technology still works as well if not better than today's "New and improved" technology.

Three cheers for Paul DeMuertes he provides a wonderful antidote to the feminised consumerism that you were pushing with that competition for "mens grooming products"..

Men do NOT need grooming products other than a bit of soapy water to shave with. Anything more and we're headed down the same sorry, sad path that women have headed down where their lives and existences are increasingly revolving around their possessions, their fashions and the products.. Possessions, products and fashions that they feel confident will deliver them the self esteem they so sorely lack.
